Málaga Cathedral
A visit to the cathedral in the center of Málaga is a must during your stay. This majestic building, constructed between 1528 and 1782, beautifully combines different architectural styles. The 84-meter-high north tower rises high above the city, making it an impressive sight even from the outside.
Tip: For a unique view, you can climb the 200 steps to the roof.
Alcazaba de Malaga
A visit to the impressive Alcazaba de Málaga is highly recommended. This 11th-century Moorish fortress, located against the Gibralfaro mountain, forms an important historical heritage site together with Gibralfaro Castle. Within its walls, you will find atmospheric patios, lush gardens, and graceful arches, characteristic of Moorish architecture.
Its strategic location offers a magnificent view of the city and the bay of Málaga. Whether you are interested in history or simply want to enjoy the surroundings, the Alcazaba is a must-see.
Tip: Book a combination ticket and visit Gibralfaro Castle as well.
Castillo de Gibralfaro
Built in the 14th century, the Castillo de Gibralfaro is located behind the Alcazaba and offers spectacular views of Málaga and the sea. The climb from the city center is challenging but worthwhile, or you can take a taxi.
Named after an ancient lighthouse, this historic castle combines Roman and Moorish influences. In 1487, it was conquered by the Catholics and used as a residence. Inside the walls, you can walk around freely, stroll along the ramparts, and enjoy panoramic views. There is also an exhibition on its history and a restaurant with a spacious terrace.
Tip: Start your day here to enjoy the view in the morning sun, then descend to the Alcazaba.
The Roman Theater: Teatro Romano Málaga
The Teatro Romano, an impressive Roman theater dating from the 1st century, is located next to the entrance to the Alcazaba and is open to the public free of charge. It was discovered in 1951 and partially renovated in the 1960s. This historic building offers a fascinating glimpse into Málaga's past. It is a wonderful addition to the Alcazaba and Castillo de Gibralfaro.
Plaza de la Merced
During your stay in Málaga, a visit to the lively Plaza de la Merced is highly recommended. This atmospheric square, surrounded by cozy terraces, is a popular meeting place for locals.
In the middle of the square stands an impressive obelisk, a landmark amid the lively cafés. Especially in the evening, the square buzzes with energy and Spanish conviviality. On FC Málaga match days, the terraces fill with enthusiastic soccer fans, which makes the atmosphere even more special.
Parque de Málaga
Parque del Málaga offers a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Located on the seafront, this green city park is an oasis of calm with shady palm trees, wide walking paths, and cozy seating areas.
Despite its proximity to busy roads, there is a serene atmosphere here. Whether you want to walk, picnic, or simply enjoy nature, this park is the ideal place for a relaxing break on a hot day.

Mercado de Atarazanas
Mercado de Atarazanas is a covered food market in Málaga that offers an authentic experience full of colors, smells, and flavors. Here you will find a wide range of fresh products, from fruit and meat to the freshest fish. The market is located in a historic building that has a rich history as a former barracks and hospital. In 1870, it was assigned its current function as a market.
TIP: During your visit to the Mercado de Atarazanas, don't miss out on a stop at one of the tapas bars. Here you can enjoy delicious local snacks and taste the authentic flavors of Málaga.
Calle Larios
Calle Larios, Málaga's most famous shopping street, is the beating heart of the city. Here you will find both well-known Spanish chains and small boutiques. Although the El Corte Inglés department store is not located here, it is only 10 minutes away.
The street leads to Plaza de la Constitución, surrounded by beautiful buildings and cozy terraces. Here you can take a break with a drink before continuing your exploration. From the square, a narrow street leads to a maze of terraces, restaurants, and tapas bars, where you can soak up the local atmosphere.
PLEASE NOTE: The traditional siesta. Many shops are closed at lunchtime, so plan your shopping trip carefully.
Muelle Uno
Muello Uno is an attractive promenade and shopping center in Malaga that opened its doors at the end of 2011. Here you will find both well-known brands and local boutiques, making it an ideal place to shop or simply enjoy a delicious meal. Choose one of the many restaurants for a relaxed lunch or an atmospheric dinner while looking out over the lively harbor where large cruise ships regularly dock.
One of the highlights of Muello Uno is the Centre Pompidou, a museum that exhibits a wealth of modern art. Stroll along the delightful boulevard by the water and be enchanted by the artistic atmosphere and beautiful sea views.

Málaga beach east side
The beaches of Málaga offer a mix of atmosphere, accessibility, and history, each with its own unique character.
La Malagueta
This city beach is just a 10-minute walk from Plaza de la Marina. It is popular because of its proximity to the city center and the pleasant route along the shops in the harbor. In the afternoon, the beach can be partially shaded by the nearby high-rise buildings, but it remains a favorite among both locals and tourists.
- Play La Caleta
Adjacent to La Malagueta is Playa La Caleta. This beach is over a kilometer long and is the widest beach near the city. Along the promenade are several fitness machines for public use, making it ideal for athletic visitors. The nearby chiringuito La Ca.leta playa is a great place to enjoy lunch with a view of the sea. - Baños del Carmen
Although this beach is small, it is definitely worth mentioning. Baños del Carmen has an authentic atmosphere and is a historic part of Málaga. The old pavilion, which has been around since the early 20th century, is now quite dilapidated but still offers a unique place to relax. From the terrace, you have a beautiful view of the sea towards the center of Málaga. - Pedregalejo Beach
This beach is located in the former fishing village of Pedregalejo, about 5 kilometers from the city center. The atmosphere is relaxed and village-like, with mainly low-rise buildings and an authentic feel. The beaches are small, bowl-shaped, and cozy. Pedregalejo is known for its mix of authentic fish restaurants, trendy bars, and cozy terraces, making it an ideal place to enjoy a relaxing day by the sea. - El Palo Beach
This beach is located in the fishing district of El Palo, which you can reach via the boulevard from Pedregalejo. The area is popular with foreign students because of the many language schools in the neighborhood. The main attraction is the many fish restaurants, where you can enjoy fresh fish. The most famous restaurant is El Tintero, where the fish dishes are served in a unique way. Other popular beaches in the area are El Dedo, at the end of the promenade, and El Candado, just past the marina. - Cala del Moral
Located just outside Málaga and part of the municipality of Rincón de la Victoria, this quiet town is known for its wide, clean beaches, which are among the best maintained in the region. The calm atmosphere attracts fewer tourists, making it an ideal place for those seeking relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of the city. A special feature of Cala del Moral is the old railway tunnel that runs through the rocks at the end of the promenade. This tunnel connects Cala del Moral with the nearby town of Rincón de la Victoria, where you can also find wide beaches and a relaxed atmosphere. This combination of tranquility, natural beauty, and well-maintained beaches makes Cala del Moral an attractive alternative to the more urban beaches of Málaga. - Peñon del Cuervo
This small beach is characterized by a striking 12-meter-high rock known as the Rock of the Raven. The beach is popular with young Malagueños, especially during the moragas, parties where people bring food and drinks to share. Although the beach has few amenities and the nearby cement factory can cause noise pollution, Peñon del Cuervo remains a picturesque spot that is definitely worth a visit.
Málaga beach west side
The west side of Málaga offers a series of beaches that are often quieter than those on the east side and exude an authentic local atmosphere. The beaches on the west side of Málaga offer a mix of local atmosphere, sporting activities, and relaxation, and are an excellent alternative for those looking for less touristy coastal experiences. Here is an overview of what you can expect on this side of the city.
Málaga beach San Andrés
This beach is located right next to the harbor and is less crowded with tourists, but popular among locals, especially during the summer months and on weekends. San Andrés has historical significance due to the execution of General Torrijos and his men in 1831, making it an important place in the history of Málaga. It is an ideal place to experience the local culture and history.
- Play de la Misericordia
This spacious beach offers excellent facilities, including plenty of playground equipment for children and even a small water park at the end of the promenade. The wide promenade stretches for over 2 kilometers, making it perfect for long walks or bike rides. A visit to Restaurante Gutierrez Playa is highly recommended, especially for their cigales a la plancha (grilled lobsters). The terrace is close to the water, providing a wonderful dining experience with sea views.
More beaches on the west side
- Sacaba: This beach is mainly visited by locals and is a good place to enjoy a meal or drink at Merendero el Litoral.
- San Julian – Campo del Golf: This beach is popular with kitesurfers when the wind conditions are good and offers a sporting experience on the coast.
- Guadalmar San Julián: This is the last beach in the row and is known as a popular spot for nudists.
Málaga Beach Tips
- Bicycle route: Want to explore all the beaches on the west side? Rent a bicycle in the center of Málaga and follow the car-free boulevard along the coast. This is a great way to discover the various beaches.
- Safety: Never leave your belongings unattended on the beach to prevent theft.
- Food: Be sure to try the ‘espetos de sardinas’, a local specialty where sardines are grilled on small boats on the beach. This dish is a must-try along this coast.

- El pimpi
A visit to one of Málaga's oldest and most beloved bodegas is a must. This authentic bodega is known for its atmospheric ambiance and excellent culinary offerings, ideal for lunch, dinner, or an evening of tapas. In addition to a spacious terrace at the front, the bodega offers a charming interior with a picturesque patio and cozy corners near the wine barrels. Authentic Andalusian with history, known to locals and celebrities, famous for traditional tapas and a homely atmosphere.
Tip: This popular bodega attracts many visitors, so check in advance if there is space, especially if you want to sit inside. - Bodega Bar Casa de Guardia
Close to the mercado de Atarazanas is one of the oldest and most authentic bars in Málaga. This bar offers a unique experience that takes you back to times gone by. Don't expect trendy décor, but a simple bar with wine barrels behind the bar. Here, your wine is tapped directly from these barrels, providing an incomparable taste experience. The bar is almost always full of locals, which adds to the authentic atmosphere. This bar offers a real Spanish experience, where you can enjoy your wine at the bar, as there are hardly any seats available.
